Honorary law degrees to illustrious persons

The honorary degree is an honorary academic degree conferred on persons who have distinguished themselves in particular in the field of the arts or political, civil or religious life, Italians and foreigners alike.

On 13 June 1888 the University of Bologna awarded – for the first time – honorary degrees to 120 illustrious scholars who made up the delegations that came to Bologna from the main European universities.
Since then, the University of Bologna has conferred more than 380 honorary degrees to illustrious persons from the scientific world, but also to representatives of particular value in the fields of the arts, political, civil or religious life, Italian and foreign alike.

Honorary degree to the President of the European Central Bank Mario Draghi (italian language)

On Friday 22 February 2019 in the Aula Magna of Santa Lucia, the President of the European Central Bank Mario Draghi received a honorary law degree from the University of Bologna for his role in defending the principles and values of the European Union Treaties.

The ceremony was attended by Rector Francesco Ubertini, the Director of the Department of Legal Studies Michele Caianiello and Professor Giovanni Luchetti, who pronounced the laudatio.
