Department governing bodies

The Head of Department, the Deputy Director, the Administrative Manager, the Department Council and the Department Board.

Head of Department

The Head of Department represents the DSG and coordinates its institutional activities. He presides over the Council and the Board, is responsible for the execution of their respective resolutions and the preservation of their meeting minutes. The Head of Department is responsible for the Department’s administration and accounting, and has the duties of guidance, initiative, supervision and coordination of the Department’s research and educational activities. The Head of Department identifies needs and proposes the distribution of resources, oversees research activities and ensures their effectiveness, assists the research activities of professors, researchers, PhD students. The Department can encourage the establishment of organisational units, in order to implement departmental development strategies and, in particular, to promote and enhance research, with the aim of finding external financial resources.

Deputy Director

The Deputy Director is designated by the Head of Department and may be delegated to specific functions. The Deputy Director is required to replace the Herad of Department in case of absence or impediment and is delegated to sign on his behalf.

Administrative Manager

The administrative manager coordinates the administrative departments and offices of the Department. He prepares the budget and balance sheet, and presents the department’s financial situation. He supports Department Bodies according to applicable regulations relating to accounting and the organization of services and assumes the functions of secretary of the Department Board and Department Council. He collaborates with the Head of on all the activities concerning the optimal functioning of the structure.

Department Council

The Department Council has multiple roles that relate to the activities of the Department.
With regard to research, the Council, among other things:

  • approves strategic plans for research and defines their objectives in accordance with the triennial university planning document, indicating the activities of primary interest and the relative availability of facilities, services and equipment;
  • proposes the budget to the competent governing bodies of the University;
  • plans and manages staffing needs and proposals to fill posts for professors and researchers.

Department Board

The Board collaborates with the Head of Department in implementing his functions. It shapes the practices which are delegated to it by the Department Council. It is composed of the Head of Department Board, the Deputy Director, the Head of the Local Organisational Unit (UOS, Ravenna), the Department Administrative Manager and the representatives of the teaching and non-teaching staff.
