The research areas for Forensic Medicine concern 4 macro-sectors:
- necropsy medicine;
- health care liability litigation management;
- clinical forensics;
- forensic medicine.
These areas of research are closely related to the usual activities carried out by the forensic medicine in the context of the expert activity for the Judicial Offices and in the institutional activity of litigation management, the definition of the causes of death by autopsy and the consulting activity of clinical forensic medicine in the hospital environment.
The main research topics are briefly listed below:
- Management of medical-legal litigation in the healthcare sector, with particular reference to damage caused by medical error and the assessment and prevention of infections;
- Diagnosis of death, prevention and research applied to the study of the corpse subjected to diagnostic tests and judicial autopsy, with particular reference to sudden death from cardiac causes and succumbs;
- Study and evaluation of the victim of sexual violence with application of established multidisciplinary protocols;
- Study and evaluation of the victim of maltreatment in the family with particular reference to abuse of the elderly, women and children;
- Individual identification on living person, corpse and biological traces, through DNA study;
- Clinical Forensic Medicine with particular evaluation of the incapacitated patient;
- Evidence Based Medicine applied to Forensic Medicine.
